Australia Gears up for the National Day of Thanksgiving

National Day of Thanksgiving 26 May 2012

We are receiving reports from across the nation of exciting initiatives that are taking place evidencing how the National Day of Thanksgiving is being creatively used to bless literally thousands of people by just one simple act of saying "thank you". Take just these three stories as an illustration of that fact.

News today of a large Christian employer who has purchased ribbons and balloons to be used to say thank you to more than 3,000 employees at gatherings in a number of offices and work places across their numerous locations. The NDOT and the Christian values it represents will be explained to all who receive this small but meaningful token of their employers appreciation.

Combined Churches in a local area are joining together to thank more than 800 workers employed by their local council in areas such as park and road maintenance, rubbish removal and recycling, together with office and other administrative staff employed or contracted by the Council. Groups of Christians will distribute cards, ribbons and morning tea to different workplaces in the Council area. They are being encouraged in their endeavours by Council management (who will also be thanked at a special morning tea) who have said it is a great idea "as our staff never get thanked by the general public they seek to serve".

At the personal level we have heard of one lady who is planning to distribute mini thank you cards and a single flower to every household in her street to say thank you for the friendly neighbourhood they have created which they all enjoy. There is no limit to the ways that NDOT can be used by individuals, through to large employers and Churches, to express the love of Christ and a spirit of goodwill to a needy world. All it takes is a small dose of initiative and a little bit of energy and you too could make a world of difference to lots of other people.

  • To purchase Thanksgiving cards, ribbons, mini thank you cards or balloons go to your closest Koorong Store or order by writing to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Go to our website at http://www.thanksgiving.org.au/ for images of products, their costs and how to order and pay for them.
  • To order the promotional DVD write to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
  • To download posters, Church Kits, School Kits, the NDOT logo, name cards for breakfasts, radio community service announcements, video promotions for use in Sunday services and more, go to Resources page at http://www.thanksgiving.org.au/
  • Dont forget to arrange morning teas for Council Staff, Chaplains or anyone else you want to say thank you to in the week leading up to NDOT.
  • Dont forget to organise the youth in your Church and all able bodied members of your congregation to undertake acts of kindness throughout your community on the NDOT.
  • Dont forget to organise your Australia Worship celebrations on the night of the NDOT.
  • Dont forget to thank those in your congregations who have gone "the second mile" during the past 12 months in Sunday services.
  • Dont forget that Sunday May 27th (Pentecost Sunday) is also a Global Day of Prayer. Join with millions around the world praying for spiritual renewal and evival during your Sunday services.

Monday to Friday in the week leading up to the NDOT on Saturday 26th May 2012

Challenge your congregation to undertake acts of kindness throughout the community during that week. Why not think of ways that you can bless those who serve you, your family and your community throughout the year. People rarely get thanked and you will be surprised at the response you get and the opportunities that will open up to share the Gospel. You only need to take the plunge by demonstrating the Christian values of honour and respect to those who give great service to our communities without hardly ever receiving recognition and thanks.

Saturday 26th May 2012

Hold special breakfasts (at no costs to the guests) to honour those who are leaders within your community especially in the areas of Local Government and Chaplaincy that are the special themes for this year. Invite and involve your local members of Parliament, both Federal and State, your Mayor and local councillors and leaders within the business, commerce, education, health care and other community organisations thus highlighting the importance of saying thank you to a wider spectrum of your local community.

Have your Youth Groups spend the day going throughout the community doing acts of kindness for those in special need of assistance in the community i.e. the aged, infirm, single parent families, special needs etc.

Gather family and friends together for special morning teas or lunches to say thank you to each other for the support that others give to us throughout the year.

At night join with Churches across the nation in "Australia Worships". Organise a combined Churches gathering in your community to worship, celebrate and give thanks to God for all His goodness to us as a Nation and as His people. We do have so much to thank God for. Sunday 27st May 2012

Let's remember in our Sunday services to thank God for His great goodness to us but also to use this special Sunday to thank those within our congregations who go the second mile to make our congregation "the best". Celebrate the National Day of Thanksgiving in your Sunday Children's programs as a means of teaching them the value of being thankful and the blessing it can bring to others when we remember to thank them.

Brisbane Father Gets Eight Months Jail for Peaceful Protest by Jason Rushton

Graham Preston's family
April 28, 2012

A Brisbane father of seven is going to jail for 8 months for his efforts to protect the unborn. I spoke to him this week at his home in Brisbane and was awed by his courage so I told Jason Rushton about him.

Jason is a journalist with LifeSiteNews.com and tells the story much better than I can:

Graham Preston, 56, was called by police last week to arrange a time for his arrest. He negotiated to move it back from 8am to 9am this coming Wednesday, May 2, so he would have enough time to get his children to school. This 8 month sentence is the longest jail-term ever received by an Australian pro-life activist.

Mr. Preston will serve 232 days in prison - seeing him out just in time for Christmas - for refusing to pay roughly $8000 in fines that have accumulated after ten years of non-violently blocking the entrances of four abortion clinics around Brisbane.

Since beginning non-violent direct action with the group Protect Life almost exactly ten years ago (April 16, 2002), Mr. Preston has endured more than ten months in jail over five separate jail-terms - mostly in Brisbane's maximum security Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre.

The warrant for Mr. Preston's arrest came after he received a letter from the Queensland Justice Department telling him he had until April 6 - coincidentally, Good Friday - to pay the fines or else face prison.

Mr. Preston refuses to pay the fines on principle, arguing that trying to save the innocent from harm should not be regarded as criminal behaviour.

A similar letter was sent to Mr. Preston in 2010, although that time it was not followed up.

"Graham is amazingly humble. He doesn't make a song and dance about his commitment," said Anne Rampa, a fellow activist and mother of seven, who has herself been arrested more than twenty times over the last twenty years for protesting outside abortion clinics. "One thing he probably didn't tell you is that he regularly meets with men who he met in jail, offering them hospitality and even legal help if he can."

Mr. Preston's wife Liz told LifeSiteNews.com that she was extremely proud of her husband: "I have immense respect for Graham. He is a very courageous person who has my full support in these actions. Facing the prospect of having Graham in jail for eight months is quite daunting - however we have always realised that challenging the abortion culture would be costly and we have tried to not allow the potential cost prevent us from doing what we believe is right."

Graham's daughter Frances, 18, said: "I have a lot of respect for my Dad and how he takes his convictions seriously, I hope I can live as consistent a life as his. Of course I will miss him, and I will visit him as often as possible."

Daughter Suzannah, 8, said "I will miss him every day till he comes home in December, five days before Christmas. I will pray for him every night."

When Mr. Preston's fines reached $12,000 in 2004, the Governor of Queensland, Quentin Bryce, remitted half of them. (Fines for failing to follow police orders to move-on were remitted; fines for obstructing police were not. Mr. Preston appealed this decision since both charges were given by different police for the same action. The appeal failed in 2009.)

Normally in Queensland, a citizen receives one day in prison for every AUD $100 of unpaid fines. To deter Mr. Preston from 're-offending', for most of the fines he will receive three days in prison for each hundred dollars.

Two years ago, Mr. Preston wrote on his website: "Going to jail is of course not a desirable thing, either for the person who does so, or for their family who may be very directly negatively affected. Yet our conviction is that this is probably an unavoidable part of seeing the value of all human lives given proper recognition. When anyone pays a very high price for something, it makes everyone ask the question, is it worth it? That is what we want our society to be asking, what are preborn babies worth? We want to say that babies' lives are worth a person's, or even many persons', freedom."

The reason we are sharing this story with you is because Graham Preston is a true Blue Aussie hero and he and his family need our support.

This is how you can help them:

  1. Contact your local paper or radio station, tell them Graham's Prescott's story and ask the question:
Why does a peaceful protestor get a longer jail sentence than someone convicted of a criminal activity? and
Why do criminals walk free and peaceful protestors have to serve time in jail?
  2. Write to the Queensland Attorney General by letter or email and ask the same questions:

My Husband went to Jail this week by Liz Preston

Liz Preston wife of jailed Graham Preston
April 28, 2012

If a child is about to be killed, everyone should try to save that child. Right? Now, hold that thought for a minute.

My husband went to jail this week. For eight months. His crime? Sitting down. Yes, I know, sitting down is not usually regarded as being a crime and especially not one you go to jail for eight months for. But it depends on where you do it and how often.

My husband, Graham, along with a few others at different times, has sat down on dozens of occasions in recent years in front of the doors of Brisbane abortion clinics, and refused to move. He has not been charged with "sitting down" of course, but with things like trespass. But sitting down and refusing to move is all that he actually does.

I know that at this point some readers, when they see that he is opposed to abortion, will say that being sent to jail for such sit-ins is just what he deserves. But let's try and think about this for a moment.

Graham, like myself and others, believes that when a woman is pregnant she is carrying a baby. There is surely nothing too controversial with that belief - I've carried a number of babies to term myself and I have no doubt that, yes, they really were babies that I was carrying.

Indeed, I would venture to say that every woman who is happily pregnant has no doubt that she is carrying a baby and there is always much delight in viewing the ultrasound images. If the baby should be lost through spontaneous miscarriage, then there is usually considerable grief at that loss.

Further, Graham, like myself and others, believes that abortion deliberately ends the life of the baby that is being carried in the womb. Again, this should hardly be a controversial claim: as noted above, pregnancy involves the carrying of a baby in the womb, so if an abortion is carried out, that means a baby's life is deliberately taken.

So back to where this article started: if a child is about to be killed, everyone should try to save that child's life. Right? Well, yes, normally, but apparently not if the child we are talking about saving is a child that is scheduled to be killed by abortion.

In the minds of some, if the mother or parents of a preborn child decide that they want to have an abortion, then their child loses absolutely all right to have their life protected. But not everyone is prepared to simply turn away and abandon such children to death. And not without good reason either.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to which Australia is a signatory, states in the opening paragraph of the Preamble: " . . . recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world" (emphasis added).

Article 3 of the Declaration reads: "Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person." (emphasis added).

The Convention on the Rights of the Child (1990), to which Australia is also a signatory, reaffirms in the Preamble the following statement from the earlier Declaration of the Rights of the Child (1959): " . . . the child, by reason of his physical and mental immaturity, needs special safeguards and care, including appropriate legal protection, both before as well as after birth." (emphasis added)

However the reality in Australia today is that, regardless of Australia being a signatory to the above documents, there is effectively no legal protection given to the child before birth. If a woman wants to end her child's life by abortion, so long as she has the money to pay for it, she can visit an abortion clinic and readily get it done. About 90 to 100 000 babies are killed by abortion in Australia each year.

Yet here in Queensland, if a person should assault a pregnant woman and subsequently her child dies, the assailant can be punished with life imprisonment - the same penalty that is given for killing a born person.

So we have a situation where a preborn child's life is regarded as being as valuable as anyone else's life - if the mother wants the child - but if the mother does not want the child, then somehow the child, apparently, loses all value and rights and can be killed by abortion.

But it is a well-recognised injustice for the value and rights of one human being to be made dependent upon the say-so of one or more other human beings. At other times and places sub-sections of humanity, such as those who are Jewish or who have dark-coloured skin, have been deemed by others to be less than fully human and so could be made subject to death and enslavement.

Those attitudes are now almost totally rejected in our society, yet, incongruously, we live with the greatest of discriminations being openly practised against another sub-section of humanity - the preborn children. (Not to mention the harm that abortion can do to women.)

Well, not everybody is prepared to just live with such double standards.

Yes, my husband and the others have been found to be breaking the law in their efforts to come to the defence of children who are scheduled to be aborted. It is clearly no small thing for them to defy the law and do so over and over again. Yet laws, which allow for the wholesale destruction of innocent human life, cannot be taken to be absolute.

As Martin Luther King Jr. wrote in his famous letter from Birmingham jail, " . . . there are two types of laws: just and unjust. I would be the first to advocate obeying just laws. One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws."

Yes, if a child is about to be killed, all of us should try to save the child - even if we are sent to jail for doing so.

Melbourne's Fed Square "Undeniable" Celebration. Even Dawkins turns up! 15 April 2012

Undeniable Melbourne 15 April 2012

'Undeniable' was a very exciting night, with around 2000-3000 people watching at Fed Square main stage. And we had over 100 atheists come over after the Global Atheist Convention, including Richard Dawkins. What excited me the most though was that two influential churches cancelled their Sunday night service with less than 2 weeks notice, so that they could come and be a part of it. (The whole journey from waking up with the idea to the actual event, was only 24 days).

Our message to the city of Melbourne was that "we know God is real because He has changed our lives". We had around 80 helpers in white t-shirts with the words "ask me my story", who talked and prayed with people in the crowd. It was truly a night where the church was in action to share their faith and see God move.

We have a report of the night and photos on our website:

www.undeniablemelbourne.com

and we have a short highlights video on youtube:

Before the event we also asked Christians to publicly share their story on our Facebook page, and so we also have over 80 testimonies there.
